Real Madrid are weighing up a sensational £84 million bid for Manchester United maestro Bruno Fernandes, according to the Daily Star.
The Spanish giants have reportedly been scouting Fernandes over the past few months and see him as an ideal replacement for veteran Luka Modric.
United manager Ruben Amorim is unsurprisingly keen to hang on to his captain, given how important he has been this season.
The 30-year-old playmaker has tallied 16 goals and 16 assists in 44 games across all competitions.
His contract at Old Trafford runs until 2027. There’s also an option to extend for a further year, but the club could struggle to turn down a lucrative offer given their current financial position.
Fernandes has been United’s lynchpin since joining the club from Sporting CP in 2020, bagging 95 goals and 82 assists in 277 games.
He leads United’s scoring charts with eight Premier League goals in 28 matches this term. He has also been their chief creator, with 10 league assists to his name.
Madrid are close to wrapping up a deal for Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and could turn their attention to Fernandes afterwards.
Fernandes gets a lot of stick from the United faithful for a player who is at the peak of his powers and singlehandedly dragging the club out of their misery.
When the Red Devils slump – which has been a recurring theme given the season they’ve had – fans, pundits, and club legends are quick to pile on the Portuguese star.
If Madrid do come calling in the summer, Fernandes would be silly not to jump on the first available flight to Spain.
Fernandes has given United his prime years, coming clutch for the team time and again, but has just one major honour to show for all his trouble.
Stepping into Luka Modric’s boots at Madrid wouldn’t be easy, but he has the experience, leadership and quality to fit in like a glove.
For all his flaws, Fernandes is a world-class midfielder.
He should have the titles and accolades to back up his outstanding qualities, and United are light years away from returning to their glory days.
