It has not been a great day in the offices at Valdebebas as Real Madrid have only confirmed blow after blow as part of the aftermath of the Cup defeat.
For starters, the club confirmed that Antonio Rudiger has undergone surgery and will be out for the season before reports emerged that Dani Ceballos has also sustained a blow.
The latest development is the announcement of Ferland Mendy’s injury and the fact that he is ruled out for the season as well, a development that has exposed Real Madrid’s short-staffed left-back department.
Real Madrid have made it clear in recent months that both full-back positions are a priority for them to reinforce in the upcoming summer transfer window. Alphonso Davies was the top target but his signing is now ruled out after he renewed with Bayern Munich.
As revealed by The Athletic in a recent report now, Real Madrid are attentively looking at the left-back department. Three names have caught the attention of the club – Milos Kerkez, Alvaro Carreras and Miguel Gutierrez.

Kerkez, Bournemouth’s star left-back who has lit up England this season, also has serious interest from several Premier League clubs. While he will be a good fit for Real Madrid, Bournemouth want over €55 million for his transfer.
Benfica star Carreras is also on Real Madrid’s wishlist and is seen as a safe bet both in terms of his defensive output and attacking potential. Furthermore, he is a former La Fabrica talent and knows the club.
The only drawback in his case is the price tag demanded by Benfica which is said to be close to €50 million, a fee Florentino Perez and Co. deem to be too high.

The third, and most practical option, remains Miguel Gutierrez who is an ex-Real Madrid player and currently playing for Girona.
Gutierrez has been linked with a move back home for a long time now, and the fact that the club have a €8 million purchase clause on him makes him the most economical option.
However, recent reports suggested that the Spaniard was not being considered by the club for the upcoming summer. Whether that changes now remains to be seen.
