Scales on competing with Trusty for Celtic starting slot

Liam Scales admits it was tough being out injured earlier in the season, but believes that the competition for places at Celtic is great as it keeps everyone on their toes in training and in games…

The Irishman’s been back in the team in recent weeks again, playing alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers as that main protection against opposition attacks on Viljami Silisalo’s goal.

Scales and Trusty have shared the left sided central defence role

Both Liam Scales and Auston Trusty have been in and out of the team this year and Brendan Rodgers has chopped and changed between the two in a bid to bring the best out of each player. Between the two of them they have had a pretty solid campaign whenever they’ve been included and barring the odd mistake here and there (which is to be expected over the course of a season), they have served the team and our manager well.

“I played with Auston at the start of the season, he’s brilliant,” Liam Scales

Speaking to Celtic TV on what it’s been like this term, Scales said: “I played with Auston at the start of the season, he’s brilliant, and I enjoyed playing alongside him. He’s a good player and it’s always going to be the case here that whoever comes in, there will always be strong competition because we do have four or five good players for each position. It’s a positive thing because it keeps everyone at the top of their game, and you can’t afford to get slack because you know you won’t play if you do.”

‘I got myself fit and ready and got the chance to come back in’

When asked about his spell away from the starting line-up and first team more generally when injured, the Irishman stated: “It was tough. I had to go for an operation and everything so I knew I’d be out for a good few weeks. But the physios were brilliant and it actually recovered probably quicker than we thought it would. It’s great to be back in. I just got myself fit and ready and thankfully, I got the chance to come back in last week.”

“Everyone wants to be starting games”

The centre-back who had a loan spell at Aberdeen insists everyone at Celtic Park is thriving under the current competition for places and has vowed to remain at his best during the run-in. “It’s where everyone wants to be,” he added. “Everyone wants to be starting games and the competition is huge as well. It’s good to be in and I know I need to stay on top of my game to stay in and that’s obviously the plan between now and the end of the season.”
