The Japanese international’s contract at Borussia Park expires in 2026, and at the moment, he is seemingly not interested in extending his contract early. As Gladbach do not want to be put in the same position as they were with Marcus Thuram, Ramy Bensebaini and Matthias Ginter, they will be forced to sell him in the summer. Itakura is already attracting interest from clubs across Europe due to his performances this season.

die Fohlen are said to already be searching the market for a potential replacement for Itakura in the summer. As of right now, Kevin Dijks is to join on a free transfer in the summer from Copenhagen.

A departure of the Japanese international could open a pathway for Fabio Chiarodia, the Italian has struggled for game time since joining from Werder Bremen. After the performances of Lukas Ullrich when he was thrown in, the same opportunity could be offered to Chiarodia. In addition to Ullrich, goalkeeper Tiago Pereira Cardoso has also been given the chance to be Gladbach’s number one this season.
