Aston Villa are reportedly closing in on a move for Rosenborg's star central midfielder Sverre Nypan, who had been previously targeted by Arsenal and Manchester City.

Nypan has been a figure of interest for clubs from across the continent since he made his top-flight debut as a 15-year-old. Quickly and predictably likened to his compatriot Martin Odegaard, who enjoyed an even more prodigious start to his career, the versatile midfielder was thought to be of interest to Arsenal and Manchester City during the January transfer window.

After much speculation, Nypan opted to stay in Norway until the summer and it now appears that he has decided where his future lies.

Villa are described as being in "pole position" to sign the teenager after sporting director Monchi travelled to Norway this month, The Times claim. Fabrizio Romano supports that brief and adds that only the final details of his Villa contract are left to be finalised.

The Premier League outfit will then have to agree a transfer fee with Rosenborg but are said to be "confident" a deal can be struck. Norwegian outlet TV2 claim that a sum in the region of £10.8m would be enough to lure Nypan away from Trondheim and Nottingham Forest have also made a last-ditch attempt to convince the teenager.

Nypan has supposedly visited London, Birmingham and Manchester this year in preparation for a summer move.

The talented midfielder has been deployed in a range of roles, lining up as one of his side's deepest passers and a striker. Nypan clearly has an eye for goal, scoring eight and creating another seven in 28 top-flight appearances last year. The teen opened his account for the current calendar-year campaign on his first start.
