During his latest interview with Corriere della Sera, former Juventus manager Thiago Motta reflected on the final stretch of his career in Turin. Despite joining the club as one of Europe’s most highly appreciated young managers, the 42-year-old flopped at the Allianz Stadium.

Motta took charge of Juventus last summer as a long-term replacement for Massimiliano Allegri. After an incredible stint at Bologna, he was supposed to be the architect of a new dominant Bianconeri era. The club invested heavily in reinforcing the squad to set Motta up for success.

However, it didn’t turn out well for either side. Juventus had lost back-to-back league matches to Atalanta and Fiorentina via an aggregate score of 7-0 on the stroke of March’s international break. Unfortunately for Motta, those heavy defeats proved the end of the road as the record-time Italian champions sacked him during the pause.

Motta’s successor, Igor Tudor, won on his touchline debut last week as Juventus squeezed past Genoa 1-0 on home turf. However, they still trail fourth-placed Bologna by a point, which was among the main reasons behind Motta’s early farewell.

No one who is not arrogant denies their mistakes,” Motta said during the interview. “I do not accept that all the work done is thrown away.

Juventus must recover from Motta’s dismal tenure to avoid finishing outside Serie A’s top four, and beating high-flying Roma in Sunday’s mouth-watering league clash at the Stadio Olimpico could prove decisive.
