Tottenham Hotspur will be hoping to boost their spirits with a rare Stamford Bridge win against Chelsea on Thursday at 8pm.
Tottenham (4-3-3): Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Sarr, Bentancur, Maddison; Johnson, Solanke, Son
Ange Postecoglou’s men currently sit 14th in the Premier League, 10 points outside the top half. Of course, they’ll try to finish as high as they can, but European football through the league seems unlikely.
So now it is about pride. And the chance to hurt Chelsea will be enough incentive for Tottenham. The north London club have won just one Premier League game at Stamford Bridge, a 1-3 victory on 1st April 2018. That ended a 28-year wait for an away league win against Chelsea.
Tottenham have enjoyed a lot of boosts from the March international break. Postecoglou should be able to welcome back a good bunch of his players.
The most expected return is that of Lucas Bergvall, who had missed both matches for Sweden over the international break due to illness. But he is unlikely to be in Postecoglou’s first-choice starting XI, instead looking to make an impact from the bench.
Dejan Kulusevski hasn’t played for Tottenham since the end of February due to injury. The Swede hasn’t been spotted in training since the return from the international break, but some Tottenham fans are holding out hope that he will be available.
An April return was also earmarked for Richarlison, who had been in light training before the international break. Whether he’ll be ready to face Chelsea remains to be seen, but he wouldn’t be down to start either way.
Danso is a doubt with a hamstring injury suffered at the start of March, and will be assessed in the final days before the game. Radu Dragusin is out for the season.
So we may not see too many changes to Tottenham’s team, with Son Heung-min, Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson forming the front line. Postecoglou has switched back to his 4-3-3 in recent weeks, with James Maddison dropped into the midfield rather than playing as a No.10.
Tottenham also have their full-strength back five to call upon, something they haven’t been able to say too often this season.
Son Heung-min is chasing a Premier League record for Tottenham — or at least equalling on. The South Korean has provided nine assists so far this season, more than any other Tottenham player. One more assist would make him just the second Tottenham player to reach 10+ Premier League assists in four separate seasons for Tottenham, after Christian Eriksen.
Son’s nine assists this season have come at 0.43 per 90 minutes, placing him in the top five for the Premier League among players with at least 1,000 minutes played. He has created 49 chances in total, with 16 of those being big chances. Only three players have created more big chances in the Premier League this season.
The Tottenham man also ranks in the top 20 for Expected Assists (4.86) and 10th for his open-play xA of 4.56. But, Son has never provided a league assist for Tottenham against Chelsea in his 17 games so far.
This is the most he’s faced a side in the Premier League without setting up a goal. He has scored three goals against Chelsea, including in the reverse fixture earlier this season.
