Saturday is a monumental day for the club. Aston Villa fans have been able to say that a lot as of late, but it's been true each time. Facing an in-form Newcastle team while pursuing a needed Champions League spot means high stakes for the Unai Emery side.
Not that there are ever easy games in the Premier League, but the fixture against the Magpies is expected to be a particularly difficult challenge. After all, they are coming off a 5-0 thrashing against Crystal Palace. More importantly, NUFC is playing at an exceptional level at the moment, even when their chances aren't flying in.
That being said, AVFC possesses plenty of quality of their own. With Donyell Malen able to play in non-Champions League matches and Ollie Watkins looking to break the club record, the Villans have plenty of firepower to match anything that Saturday's visitors may bring to Villa Park.
Fans everywhere saw during the CL quarter-finals that even a side with the attack of PSG struggles when playing at B6. The fortress, as Emery describes it, simply offers a difficult resistance for opposing teams to overcome. As evidenced by some of the latest games, Villa can always grab a result when playing in front of the claret and blue supporters.
Knowing the current situation in the standings, the Villa boss used his programme notes to once again expand on the situation that will unfold in the EPL today in Birmingham. The Spaniard implored:
"Don't forget: today is not a match that will come to us. We need to enjoy it, attack it, and give everything every single minute. "
In a message that could apply equally to his players and supporters, Emery seems to be of the opinion that the excitement needs to outweigh any concern that could be present during this matchday. Of course, Newcastle are a good team that is well coached. They aren't invincible, though.
Knowing what this midfield is capable of and the array of options that the Villa boss can turn to to change the tide of the game at any given moment, he is speaking with a certain level of confidence. For Emery, he knows how dangerous his side can be in the attack and how strong they are in front of Emiliano Martínez.
In what should prove to be a spectacular match, expect Aston Villa to attack with the same fearlessness that nearly saw them force extra time against their Ligue 1 counterparts on Tuesday.
