Jamie Vardy has said he is ‘devastated’ to be leaving Leicester City but believes the timing is right.

Vardy will leave Leicester at the end of the current campaign after 13 decorated years at the King Power Stadium. A £1m signing from non-league Fleetwood Town, Vardy established himself as arguably Leicester’s greatest ever footballer during his time with the club.

The 38-year-old has scored 198 goals in 495 appearances for the Foxes and has been an irreplaceable part of the club’s greatest successes.

He was named FWA Footballer of the Year as Leicester stunned football to win the Premier League in 2015/16. That season, he netted 24 league goals – including setting a Premier League record of 11 consecutive games with a goal.

Vardy won the Premier League’s Golden Boot in 2019/20 and lifted the FA Cup with Leicester in 2021 – the club’s first ever success in that competition. Despite not making his top-flight debut until 27, Vardy has scored 143 Premier League goals. Only 14 players have netted more.

Announcing his exit, Vardy said Leicester will always have a ‘massive place’ in his heart.

“To the fans of Leicester, I’m gutted that this day is coming but I knew that it was coming eventually,” Vardy said to the club’s social media.

“I’ve had 13 unbelievable years at this club, with lots of success, some downs, but the majority all highs. But it’s finally time to call it a day, which I’m devastated about.

“I think the timing is right. I just want to sincerely thank you all for taking me in as one of your own. Leicester will always, always have a massive place in my heart and I’ll make sure that I’ll be following for the years to come. In what I hope will be even more success for the club.

“As for now this is my goodbye but you will see me again soon, I promise. Thank you.”
