Former Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini weighed in on the Giallorossi’s season finale.
While talking to Il Tempo, Sabatini said, “One word to describe Ranieri’s work so far? Prodigious.”
“The conditions were different: with De Rossi things were improving although this the team had started this season badly, so restarting a team in such a situation was very difficult. Ranieri did a great job, formidable.”
“Ranieri’s next role as club consultant? When I was at Roma there was no consultant. Claudio has a football sensibility and enormous experience so he will know by himself what decisions to make. The important thing is that they let him do it, because Ranieri’s advice cannot be ignore. He must be listened to.”
“It is inevitable that if he is not listened to he will take other paths,” he added.
“Dovbyk? Dzeko did poorly in his first season because he didn’t score goals, but he had the movements of a striker so much so that he then scored more than 100 goals. Dovbyk still has to internalize the right movements and also the first contact with the ball which is not always perfect. However, I have seen him make promising plays, also in support of teammates who arrive on the run.”
“Ghisolfi? It seems to me that he is working well. At the beginning he was too marginal, he never appeared and spoke little. Little by little he began to show his face, he follows players at an international level, these are important signs, of operativity and courage. He will grow a lot in the environment but it will also depend on which coach arrives.”
“I really hope they can return to the Champions League. A club like Roma can’t not make the Champions League. It’s a fierce wish, I can’t stand the idea that they won’t participate, especially with this captivating format. Roma must make the Champions League.”
