Ruben Amorim could see his options bolstered by the addition of several sidelined stars after the international break.

Manchester United return to club action with a brutal run of fixtures in all competitions, initially facing Champions League-chasing Nottingham Forest on April 1 before hosting Manchester City five days later and then preparing for the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final away to Olympique Lyonnais.

Sandwiched between the two European fixtures is a clash away to Newcastle United, who will still be reeling from the emphatic celebrations of winning their first major trophy in 56 years.

Alas, having as much depth as possible will be imperative for Amorim as he looks to salvage something from a truly torrid campaign at Old Trafford.

United team news: Luke Shaw closing in on long-awaited return

Fans can expect more definitive updates on the side’s current absentees when the boss next speaks to the press in the next few days. Amad Diallo teased his return on social media, despite it first being feared that he would miss the remainder of the term entirely, while youngster Ayden Heaven, who was stretchered off in the win over Leicester City last time out, has been spotted at Carrington wearing a protective boot.

Luke Shaw, who has now gone over 13 months without starting a club match, recently travelled to Qatar to continue working on the final stage of his rehabilitation in warm weather, as per Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic. His ‘return to the grass’ is said to be ‘close’.

Of course, the senior Red’s return will raise questions over Patrick Dorgu’s involvement, given the Dane was acquired specifically to occupy the left wing-back role.

Shaw was previously hailed by ex-teammate Alex Telles as ‘the best left-back in the Premier League’, so the United faithful – and Amorim – will be hoping he can revive his stellar form as soon as he’s available.
