Sheffield Wednesday have had a positive first full season under Danny Rohl, although they are likely to fall short in their pursuit of a top-six finish.

The German was appointed as Owls boss in 2023, inheriting a side that looked doomed for relegation.

Yet, under Rohl’s guidance, Wednesday improved almost immediately, and they pulled off what was a miraculous escape.

Therefore, it’s perhaps no surprise that Rohl is on the radar of other clubs, with Southampton said to have considered the 35-year-old after Russell Martin’s exit earlier this season, and it’s thought they could go back in for him in the summer.

However, they may face competition for the Wednesday chief, as the Daily Mail have stated that Rohl is a target for Leicester, as Ruud van Nistelrooy may depart.

Of course, you would expect Wednesday to do all they can to keep Rohl, but with plenty of chaos surrounding the club under Dejphon Chansiri, including not paying March’s wages on time, the chance to move on may appeal to the ex-Bayern Munich coach.

And, here we look at TWO reasons why Rohl is a head coach in demand…

He has proven himself in the Championship

Realistically, Southampton and Leicester will be playing in the Championship next season, and both will have aims of winning promotion.

Even though Rohl doesn’t have a promotion on his CV, he has shown over the past 18 months that he is a very good manager at this level.

As mentioned, the work he did in keeping Wednesday up last season was outstanding, and the job he has done in this campaign has perhaps gone under the radar. Now, the side is in a mid-table position despite operating on a budget.

When appointing a new boss, Championship experience isn’t the be-all and end-all, but Saints and Leicester know they are getting a manager who understands the demands of this level, which should help him hit the ground running.

He has high-level coaching experience

Even though the aim for Southampton and Leicester will be promotion, they will also be looking to the long-term, and there are reasons to think Rohl could be the long-term answer.

Whilst his managerial career is limited, Rohl is very highly regarded as a coach, having had stints with RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich and the German national team.

That means he has worked with some top players, and the fact he has been trusted in such roles indicates he is a modern, forward-thinking coach with great tactical understanding.

Naturally, you would expect Rohl’s work to get better if he is working with a higher standard of player, as well as having a bigger budget to attract more quality, and it’s fair to say most would agree that Wednesday’s group is a level or two below the respective squads at Southampton and Leicester.
