FC Bayern beat Augsburg 3-1 on Friday evening to extend their lead in the Bundesliga overnight. Dimitrios Giannoulis handed Augsburg the lead after the half-hour, but Jamal Musiala levelled the scores before half-time. Harry Kane put Bayern in front before Leroy Sané’s deflected shot put the game to bed in added time.

Bayern started with Jonas Urbig in goal and Konrad Laimer, Eric Dier, Minjae Kim and Josip Stanišić in defence. Joshua Kimmich and João Palhinha anchored a midfield featuring Michael Olise, Musiala and Sané, with Kane up front. Musiala had to be replaced with injury early in the second half, Thomas Müller taking over. Serge Gnabry replaced Olise before Raphaël Guerreiro and Gabriel Vidović came on for Sané and Kane in the closing minutes.

Level at half-time

Munich dominated possession but struggled to find a way through Augsburg’s solid defence at first. The particularly industrious Sané miscued a volley from a corner before hitting the side-netting from a tight angle. Samuel Essende fired wide and Sané put a shot over at the other end, but the home side took the lead when a free-kick found Giannoulis, who fired past Urbig.

Augsburg keeper Finn Dahmen proved equal to an Olise header before Musiala saw an effort blocked but kept hold of the ball on the ground and slotted past Dahmen. Kane’s free-kick into the wall meant it was level at half-time.

Turnaround complete

Urbig denied Essende after the restart, but Bayern soon upped the pressure. Olise hit the bar before Cedric Zesiger was sent off for a second bookable offence after a challenge on Kane. Munich took the lead from the ensuing free-kick when an Olise cross found Kane, who powered a header past Dahmen.

Sané had an effort deflected behind and his teammates saw a number of shots blocked. Kane fired just wide before Dahmen denied Sané and Chrislain Matsima almost put through his own goal, but a Sané shot was deflected by Matsima and went in as Bayern sealed derby victory.

The result means Bayern have 68 points from 28 matches, nine clear of Bayer Leverkusen, who take on Heidenheim on Saturday. The Bavarians will be back in action on Tuesday when they entertain Inter Milan in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.
