Reports are swirling all around the internet that Manchester United are closing in on Matheus Cunha.

Fabrizio Romano has been all over this story, and this morning reported that the Red Devils “maintain optimism” about getting a deal done, as the Wolves player “really wants the move.”

The fact that they’re not going to be in the Champions League is “not expected to be a factor,” as the Brazilian is keen on a move anyway, and United are gearing up to pay the £62.5m release clause to Wolves in instalments.

That deal looks quite far down the line then, and our only question mark is why Chelsea haven’t been more involved in this chase. Maybe it’s because Cunha always seems to save his best for games against us, including a hat-trick last February, but we really rate him and think he would be a great fit.

He’s technically great, but most importantly he’s a workhorse, really physical and competitive. He’s captained Wolves a lot, and has a real edge to him that our squad desperately lacks at the moment.

We’ve been linked with him on and off, but nothing nearly as concrete as these Man U rumours has come about. In January we were told it was “one to watch,” but we’ve not heard much since. We can’t help but feel like we may be missing out a little here on a potentially great player.

The likes of Liam Delap and Benjamin Sesko are certainly talented, but we can see them struggling in the same way that so many of our other signings have in the last couple of years. We need to sign some attitude as well as skill, and Cunha would bring that in spades.
