Matheus Cunha has confirmed his intention to leave Wolves at the end of the season.
Cunha turned down interest from rival clubs in January to sign a new contract at Molineux. The Brazilian rejected an exit with Wolves battling against relegation, but is keen on a new challenge once the club’s Premier League status is confirmed.
Cunha’s contract includes a release clause of around £62.5m and a host of Premier League rivals are weighing up an approach.
Speaking to The Guardian, Cunha – who has scored 13 goals in the Premier League this season – said he believes he needs to take the next step to fulfil his potential.
“Now we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]…I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step,” he said.
“I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.”
On January interest, he added: “I had a lot of offers but I wouldn’t feel well if I had done it [moved].
“Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.”
Cunha admitted he will forever be grateful to Wolves for their role in his career, with the 25-year-old having thrived since his arrival from Atletico Madrid in 2023.
“Sometimes all we want in life is affection,” Cunha said. “People think we have everything, but we’re human beings, too. We need a bit of understanding – we have our difficulties.
“Wolves gave me that joy back. The fans [have given] me a lot. The status I have today, the player I am now and the happiness I’m feeling, it’s because of them. I’m really grateful to Wolves.”
