Why Matheus Cunha Could Be the Key to Liverpool’s Forward Plans

Arne Slot’s Liverpool: Eyes on Evolution, Not Revolution

Liverpool’s approach to the summer transfer window is already generating headlines. With Arne Slot at the helm, the club appears poised for targeted recruitment rather than wholesale change. On the latest episode of Media Matters from Anfield Index, journalist David Lynch joined Dave Davis for a detailed breakdown of current links, strategic targets, and what the future might hold—particularly when it comes to forward reinforcements.

Cunha and the Numbers Game

One name stood out during the conversation: Matheus Cunha. Though only lightly linked in media circles, Lynch was clear about the Brazilian’s suitability for Liverpool. “His numbers are excellent… non-penalty goals in the Premier League are excellent,” he said, adding, “he’s a guaranteed goalscorer.” Lynch went on to highlight Cunha’s versatility: “He can play in that attacking midfield role… play the side a little bit as well. He’s flexible.”

Importantly, Lynch noted the financial aspect, calling Cunha’s reported £62 million release clause “just screams Liverpool.” He explained, “That price, the flexibility, the output… it ticks a lot of boxes for how Liverpool’s recruitment staff operate.”

Alternatives Under Scrutiny

While Cunha was the most positively discussed, other forwards were addressed with caution. David Lynch was more sceptical about Liam Delap, saying, “On the surface I don’t think those underlying numbers are that fantastic.” He admitted that Liverpool would be “watching him,” but added that it’s “probably too early days” and questioned whether Delap is “a little bit closer to the finished product” that Liverpool now seeks.

On João Pedro of Brighton, Lynch remarked, “They’ve liked him for a while… but his level of production is not that high in terms of non-penalty goals.” He suggested Liverpool may hesitate to “spend 80 million on a facilitator” when similar traits might be sourced more economically. “I imagine Liverpool’s recruitment staff would feel they could do that elsewhere for cheaper.”

Transfers, Timing, and Realistic Moves

While transfer noise is everywhere, Lynch cautioned that we’re “still in April,” noting it’s early for definitive movement. That said, one player does appear firmly on Liverpool’s radar. When asked about a potential £45 million move for Bournemouth’s standout midfielder, Lynch said, “All the ingredients to get that deal done are there.” He added, “That could be one that gets done early in the summer if Liverpool do it.”

On youth players like Kieran Morrison, Lynch offered a pragmatic view. “It’s interesting this comes out during a contract situation… maybe it’s just a nudge from the player’s side,” he said, suggesting that media speculation can often be a tactic in negotiations.

Unrest and Renewal in the Dressing Room

The discussion wasn’t limited to incomings. Questions around Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk’s contract renewals also took centre stage. When Van Dijk recently stated at a public event, “There’ll be news before the end of the season,” both hosts expressed concern over the ambiguity.

“He says, ‘I love the club and the club loves me’… but why is this still going on?” Lynch asked. He pressed for more transparency, questioning, “What’s the sticking point? Is it wages? Contract length?”

Despite the mystery, Lynch remained optimistic, saying, “Still confident Van Dijk will sign. They want him, and he wants to stay.”

Final Word: Expect Evolution, Not Fireworks

As the Premier League run-in continues and the summer nears, Liverpool’s plans under Arne Slot are beginning to take shape. What’s clear from this podcast episode is that the club is focusing on efficient, high-output players—like Cunha—who align with both tactical needs and fiscal prudence.

“There’s one coming in at least,” Lynch remarked, reflecting on the uncertainty and sheer volume of names linked. But of all the options discussed, Cunha stood out as the one most likely to wear red next season. As Dave Davis concluded, “He does seem the best all-rounder… someone might call it a compromise, but maybe that’s exactly what Liverpool need.”
