Stefan De Vrij has admitted that losing to AC Milan in the Coppa Italia semi-final ‘hurts a lot’, but they must continue to fight in remaining competitions.

Milan booked their place in the final of the cup with a resounding 3-0 win over Inter at San Siro, securing a 4-1 aggregate victory. Luka Jovic was the man who stole the show, scoring a goal each side of the interval, while Tijjani Reijnders scored a third late on to make it an emphatic win.

There were a lot of impressive elements in what was a fifth derby without defeat this season, and one was Mike Maignan’s work in goal. His best moment came when he saved De Vrij’s powerful header from a corner that prevented it from being 1-2 and beginning a potential comeback.

De Vrij spoke to Mediaset shortly after the full-time whistle to share his assessments on a second straight loss for Inter, something that hasn’t happened all season. MilanNews transcribed his statements.

That save from Maignan…

“I connected well, he made a great save unfortunately. We could have reopened the game, unfortunately it didn’t work out. We tried to score the 2-1 but we couldn’t do it, that’s how it went.”

Was it a match that was the result of tiredness? Or the merits of Milan?

“A bit of everything. It’s true that we’ve played twice a week almost always this year. We had a good first half, we created but it didn’t want to go in. They scored on their only chance.

“Unfortunately the game went like this. We have to stay positive and leave this behind even if it hurts. We have to work hard for the other objectives.”

How are you experiencing the season finale?

“We play a lot of games but that’s what we want. Before tonight we were where we wanted to be, playing on all fronts at the end of April.

“Today the defeat hurts a lot because it’s still a trophy, an opportunity to win a trophy. It hurts but we have to look forward, we still have a lot of goals and a lot to do this season.”
