Eintracht Frankfurt’s Thursday Europa League elimination unfortunately produced two major injury casualties. As the Bundesliga outfit now seek to qualify for the Champions League via the table, head coach Dino Toppmöller’s team will have to do without influential midfielder Mario Götze and rising young keeper Kaua Santos.

Götze – who had to exit proceedings with muscular issues – might yet be available this season. Kaua Santos is done for the year. The 22-year-old keeper’s rollercoaster ride of a campaign ends on an especially dour note. The nature of the ACL injury will most likely keep Kaua Santos out through the first half of next season.

Talk of Kaua Santos permanently replacing veteran SGE captain Kevin Trapp in the Eintracht net thus finds itself shelved for now. Trapp himself did return to squad training shortly before the Europa League fixture and could be ready to start between the sticks against FC Augsburg in the league on Sunday.

Third choice keeper Jens Grahl, wo has 15 Bundesliga appearances to his credit, constitutes the other option. Toppmöller indicated he would ask Trapp first whilst speaking at his Friday press conference.

I’ll talk to him again [after Saturday’s training session],” Toppmöller said on Friday. “Then we’ll have to see if he’s an option for the game.
