Virgil van Dijk has said he never had any doubts over his future after signing a new two-year contract with Liverpool.

Van Dijk’s current contract was due to expire in the summer but the Dutch defender has put pen to paper on new terms. The 33-year-old’s new deal will run until 2027, with Liverpool keen to secure the future of their club captain.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Van Dijk said it was an easy decision for the ‘adopted Scouser’.

“I’m very happy, very proud,” Van Dijk said.

“There are so many emotions obviously that go through my head right now speaking about it.

“It’s a proud feeling, it’s a feeling of joy. It’s just incredible. The journey I’ve had so far in my career, to be able to extend it with another two years at this club is amazing and I’m so happy.

“It was always Liverpool. That was the case. It was always in my head, it was always the plan and it was always Liverpool.

“There wasn’t any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family. I’m one of Liverpool. Someone called me the other day an adopted Scouser – I’m really proud to hear these things, it gives me a great feeling.”

Van Dijk has been an integral part of Liverpool’s impressive campaign under Arne Slot. The Dutch international has started all 32 league games for the Reds and scored the winner in Sunday’s 2-1 win over West Ham.

Liverpool need a maximum of just six points to win the Premier League, with Van Dijk closing in on becoming just the second Liverpool captain since 1990 to lift the top-flight title.
