At the end of the 2023/24 season, Jadon Sancho’s career appeared to be getting back on track after an impressive season on loan at his former club Borussia Dortmund, guiding them to the UEFA Champions League final.
However, his rocky relationship with Erik Ten Hag saw him leave on loan to Chelsea for the 2024/25 season with a huge chance to finally prove his worth in the Premier League. But, after a promising start under Enzo Maresca, his season has massively tailed off with the London side now considering paying Man United £5million to NOT sign Sancho permanently.
Former Manchester United star Lee Sharpe spoke exclusively to EPL Index and shared his thoughts on Sancho’s current situation…

“I think it’s a real shame that it hasn’t quite worked out for him there,” began Sharpe, “Perhaps Amorim will give him another chance at United but he has been so inconsistent and Chelsea won’t want to keep him permanently.”
“It’s a tricky one because he was expected to go there and set the world alight and get his game back,” continued Sharpe.
There’s no doubt that Sancho holds a tremendous amount of natural ability, but that is perhaps the source of a lot of the frustration towards the winger.
The 25-year-old has made 28 appearances for the London side this season, scoring just two goals and assisting six goals for his teammates. Sancho has also managed just one shot on target for Chelsea since Boxing Day, three months ago.
“It’s a win-win situation for Man United really because they can either sell him or take another look at him in the summer,” said Sharpe.
There’s no doubt that Amorim’s side is severely lacking creativity, which an in-form Sancho could certainly provide some aid for that issue. But, based on his struggles this season and the issues that Man United have had with him in the past, it’s very hard to see him being a solution to their problems.
“These are the gambles that you take when you send someone out on loan,” continued Sharpe, “But I guess receiving £5m from it at the end isn’t so bad.”
As it stands, it’s expected that Sancho will be amongst a long-list of summer exits this summer. Sharpe also named the likes of Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Jonny Evans, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford as players that could all leave the Red Devils in the next few months.
