Legendary Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy has announced he will leave the club at the end of the season after 13 years.
Vardy leaves Leicester as the third highest goalscorer and appearance maker in the club’s history, and having won the Premier League and FA Cup with the club.
“I’m gutted that this day is coming but I knew it was going to come eventually,” Vardy told the club.
“13 unbelievable years at this club with lots of success, some downs, but the majority all highs.
“But it’s finally time to call it a day, which I’m devastated about, but I think the timing is right.
“I want to sincerely thank you all for taking me in as one of your own. Leicester will always have a massive place in my heart and I will following for years to come in what I hope will bring even more success for the club.”
Vardy was a key part of the Leicester squad which pulled off one of the biggest shocks ever seen in football when they won the Premier League in 2016, scoring 24 league goals across that campaign.
He also helped them to win the FA Cup in 2021, beating Chelsea in the final at Wembley.
Leicester have endured more difficult times of late, however, with Sunday’s defeat to Liverpool confirming their relegation back down to the Championship having been promoted last season.
It prompted Vardy to release a statement apologising to the fans by saying: “No words I have can ever express my feelings of anger and sadness with the way this season has gone. There are no excuses.
“Having been at this club for so long, we’ve experienced so many highs and successes – and this season has been nothing but miserable and for me personally, a total embarrassment. It hurts, and I know you’re feeling it too.
“To the fans: I’m sorry. Sorry we haven’t performed.”
