Chelsea have certainly not held back when it comes to signing defenders in recent years.
The Blues have added one or two in almost every window, and still are being linked with more names to come. All of that is added to a crop of talents from the academy including the likes of Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill and Josh Acheampong.
But despite the sheer numbers on the books, it’s still proved difficult to establish a concrete first choice pair. Wesley Fofana’s injury problems have meant he’s in and out of the team, and even since returning to action recently he’s played more at right back than centre back.
Speaking to the Evening Standard, John Terry (a man who knows a thing or two about playing in a regular, established centre back partnership) explained his thoughts on that lack of consistency and how it might be holding Chelsea back.
Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill and Axel Disasi in a montage of Chelsea defence and defenders.
“I loved to play alongside someone week in, week out, where you build that relationship, have an understanding of each other’s game. It’s important we get that. We’ve been a bit unlucky with injuries. I’m sure Enzo [Maresca] would want to cement his back four or back three and get that really consistent,” the legendary former captain said.
“The boys are capable. A lot of them have played at this level for a long time now. It’s the spine of the team. If it’s a back four, I’d like to see two centre-backs [emerge] and go with them and really stick to that. It’s a case of who the manager fancies, whether Wesley has a bit more pace than others, or Levi or Tosin can step into the role. I’d like to see it cemented.”
So would we, John!
