Manchester United have been tipped to vie with Tottenham Hotspur in pursuit of one midfielder this summer.

It’s a player the Red Devils know all too well, as they let him go as a free agent back in 2020.

Indeed, Angel Gomes is now being linked with a move back to Old Trafford, five years on from his departure.

United had offered the then-19-year-old a new deal at the time, however, he was adamant about securing increased game time to take his career to the next level, which was something the club couldn’t promise.

He subsequently departed for Lille, and, after a successful loan spell with Portuguese outfit Boavista in 2021/2021, became a key figure at the heart of the French outfit’s midfield.

Gomes, 24, is now ready to depart Ligue 1 and ply his trade elsewhere – and it looks as though he won’t be short of options. Several sides are believed to be monitoring his availability ahead of his contract expiry, with United and Spurs currently viewed as the two front-runners in the race.

It’s a prospective signing that’s likely already got Roy Keane’s stamp of approval, too, as the Irish legend hailed Gomes as ‘pure quality’ after his England debut last year.

Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs weighed in on United’s links to their academy graduate, telling fans (via GiveMeSport): “I still wouldn’t discount Manchester United making a move to re-sign Gomes, and that could also be one to watch. So we can’t yet say that Spurs have got a clear run at Gomes, but they’re one of the clubs that are firmly interested.

“And I’d be surprised if West Ham succeed with their offer, despite the relatively lucrative finances on offer.”

Elsewhere on the market, INEOS chiefs are frantically searching to find a prolific, young and proven goalscorer to fully strengthen Ruben Amorim’s frontline.
