When Kylian Mbappé (26) left Paris Saint-Germain to join Real Madrid last summer, he made a considerable financial sacrifice, L’Équipe have revealed.
Mbappé currently earns €32m a year with Los Blancos after signing a five-year deal in the summer, whilst the Spanish media have estimated his signing-on fee at around €100m, however, that pales in comparison to the €250m a year that he would have earned, had he extended his stay at PSG.
“Thank you for making efforts to come here,” said president Florentino Perez upon Mbappé’s arrival at the Bernabeu, perhaps a reference to the financial sacrifice that he made to join the club. “At Madrid, Mbappé will earn a bit less money, but he will win more titles,” an employee of the Liga side told L’Équipe. Real Madrid didn’t want to bring in the Frenchman on a salary significantly larger than the rest of the squad, fearing the potential effect on the dressing room.
However, there were sacrifices on both sides. At Real Madrid, image rights are split 50/50 between the player and the club, but not with the France captain. Real Madrid have made an exception for Mbappé, who holds 80% of his image rights. It is an agreement that could see the AS Monaco academy product pocket millions. The negotiations to secure that deal were – at times – “lumpy” and “tense”, according to L’Équipe’s report.
