Federico Chiesa has been linked with a return to Italy after failing to cement himself as a regular starter at Liverpool, with Lazio named among his suitors.
The 27-year-old was considered one of the most promising players of his generation, but his career has been hindered by injury problems, beginning with a torn ACL suffered in January 2022. After spending his summer as an exile at Juventus, he ended up sealing a transfer to Anfield Road, but he’s only been scarcely used by Arne Slot this season.
The Euro 2020 winner has only made 11 appearances in all competitions, and has yet to start a Premier League contest, earning only three brief cameos. Therefore, several sources in Italy and England suggested a return to Serie A as the ideal solution for the player to put his once-promising career back on track.
But in his latest column for The Daily Briefing, renowned German journalist Christian Falk insists Chiesa is determined to stay at Liverpool and fight for his place in the team.
He wants to fulfil his contract until summer 2028. He was also not interested in the winter interest from Napoli, Inter Milan and Lazio because he wants to assert himself on Merseyside. The fact that he has had problems so far is due to his two injuries. He wants to show Liverpool this season just how valuable he can be.
Previous reports claimed Lazio would be able to secure an agreement with Liverpool on a transfer worth circa €15 million, but the most glaring issue remains the player’s wages. The Italian winger currently earns around €7 million, a figure that the Biancocelesti certainly cannot afford.
