Despite enduring a turgid season under Ruben Amorim, Manchester United can count the reverse of this fixture among their few high points from the year, winning 2-1 at the Etihad in December.

City continue to struggle with injuries, though most of them are rather old news.

The newest and most notable absence is Erling Haaland, who suffered an ankle injury after equalising in a 2-1 FA Cup win over Bournemouth. He is expected to return no earlier than the last week of the season.

Omar Marmoush deputised at striker against Leicester midweek, scoring once, and will likely hold onto the starting role this weekend at Old Trafford.

Rodri remains unavailable having ruptured his ACL early in the season, while Nathan Ake is also expected to be out through late May.

John Stones and Manuel Akanji’s injuries further thin Pep Guardiola’s defensive options.

There was little new team news to speak of in the manager’s pre-match press conference, as questions focused almost entirely on Kevin de Bruyne’s decision to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The Belgian midfielder has won all there is to win in ten years at the club, and Guardiola did not mince words as he discussed his impact at City.

He said: “[De Bruyne] is one of the league’s greatest midfielders. You always have to be careful with respect for other incredible players in the last 20, 30 years in this club, but come on. There is no doubt he is one of the greatest with his consistency.”

De Bruyne should be nailed on to start this weekend as he looks to end his City career with another win over United, against whom he has scored three and assisted six over 21 matches.

Guardiola will likely rotate his squad, though, offering a stronger selection after giving fringe players a run out against Leicester last time out.
