Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is still reportedly a transfer target for Chelsea this summer.

The 20 year old has had a complicated season due to injury and lacks an obvious starting position in Ruben Amorim’s tactical system.

Last year’s breakout star has shown glimpses of his immense talent, scoring a fine equaliser in United’s 5-4 victory over Olympique Lyonnais last week in the Europa League.

There were reports earlier in the season that Mainoo was struggling to reach a new deal with United and that the Red Devils would be prepared to sell him if no agreement could be found.

Therefore, he has been linked to numerous sides such as Real Madrid and Chelsea. Nonetheless, according to journalist David Ornstein, there is a growing feeling inside Old Trafford that the academy product will stay at the club this summer.

However, to add greater complexity to the story, CaughtOffside insist that “Chelsea are reportedly still keen on a potential transfer move for Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo this summer.”

They do admit that there is no consensus on what Mainoo’s future plans will be as journalist Simon Phillips via Substack, has claimed that Mainoo actually isn’t a top priority for the Blues at the moment.

CaughtOffside reports that Mainoo is obviously a top young talent but “it’s not yet clear where we’ll see him spending his peak years.”

They speculate that the 20 year old may be better off going to Chelsea, as whilst all is not rosy in their garden, they are at least much closer to the top of the table than United.

It is also suggested that Mainoo would be an upgrade on the “inconsistent” and “injury-prone”, Romeo Lavia.

Ruben Amorim has praised Mainoo in the past but he has also stated he is not a “full player”.

With United likely signing Matheus Cunha for one of the number 10 positions and showing interest in midfielders like Ederson, it is unclear where Mainoo will fit into Amorim’s long-term plans at the club.
