As Manchester City picked up a comfortable 2-nil win over Leicester City last night, matters off the pitch did take precedence in the game’s early stages. City fans staged a peaceful protest outside the stadium before the game began. That was followed by a large section of City fans who remained in the concourse until the 9th minute of last night’s match. The impact of the protest over the club’s ticketing policies can be seen in the tweet below. Manchester City fans got their point across last night. Now it’s now on the City hierarchy to listen to the fan’s concerns going forward.
For too long the loyalty of local supporters has been taken for granted by the Manchester City hierarchy. The increasing price of tickets, the lack of season tickets being issued and Manchester City’s recently announced partnership with Viagogo led us to this moment. There are a host of other factors that also contributed to last night’s protest. But as last night’s demonstration unfolded, the City hierarchy got a glimpse of what the game could look like if match-going or local fans’ concerns continue to be ignored. It cannot get to this point again, so it’s time that the Manchester City hierarchy listened to and rectified those fans’ concerns. Football clubs are nothing without their fans, and last night’s peaceful protest highlighted this.
The Manchester City fan’s protest had the desired effect last night. It stood out and was a moment that must be acknowledged by the City hierarchy. It’s time the club listened to their fans rather than expecting them to pay more and more and have their concerns pushed aside. Now it’s in the club’s hands, and they simply have to act accordingly. Otherwise, the glimpse they received last night could grow into something more.
