For fans who think football started when the Premier League was launched in 1992, the FA Cup is often viewed as an unwelcome distraction.
However, the world’s most iconic knockout competition remains hugely alluring for people who recognise its importance.
This season’s edition of the FA Cup could deliver a truly memorable storyline, although Manchester City may have something to say about that.
Winning the FA Cup would help Man City salvage something from an underwhelming season by their usual standards.
While their fans will be desperate for City to get the job done, supporters of the other seven teams in the competition will hope for a different outcome.
Four of the quarter-finalists – Crystal Palace, Brighton & Hove Albion, Bournemouth and Fulham have never lifted the prestigious trophy.
Nottingham Forest (1958/59), Aston Villa (1956/57) and Preston North End (1937/38) have waited a long while to win the competition again.
Given that Man City have not been at their imperious best this season, the other seven teams will never have a better chance of claiming FA Cup glory.
Club football is back! Sheffield United versus Coventry City in the Championship is a good place to start tonight.
