Brentford captain Christian Nørgaard has signed a new contract.

The highly influential midfielder has penned a two-year deal with the Bees, which runs until the summer of 2027.

Denmark international Nørgaard has made 187 appearances for the west Londoners, registering 12 goals and 16 assists.

“This new contract was a no-brainer for us and Christian,” said head coach Thomas Frank.

“Christian has been an integral part of the fantastic journey we have been on these past six years. He is our club captain and one of our most important players.

“His ability to sense danger and make interceptions is at an extraordinarily high level, as is his ability to play forward on the first or second touch. And he has picked up his goal threat this season!

“The first time I coached Christian, he was a no.10; now he is one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League.

“I’m very happy. Hopefully we can continue to be successful together with Christian leading the team.”

Nørgaard signed for the Bees in May 2019 after a spell with Serie A club Fiorentina. It was a move which reunited him with his former Brøndby head coach Frank.

An exemplary first season saw him rewarded with fresh four-year deal in September 2020, shortly before he made his senior Denmark debut.

He was forced on to the sidelines with an ankle injury just four games into the 2020/21 campaign but returned to play an important role in Brentford’s promotion to the Premier League by featuring in 13 of the final 14 Championship fixtures.

He was included in Denmark’s Euro 2020 squad and made five appearances as the Danes reached the semi-final.

In Brentford’s maiden Premier League season, Nørgaard started all 35 of the games he was involved in as the west Londoners finished in 13th.

There was little surprise when, in December 2021, he signed a further contract extension until the summer of 2025.

An Achilles issue restricted Nørgaard to 23 appearances the following campaign. He was included in Denmark’s 2022 World Cup squad, though, and made one outing in Qatar.

After Pontus Jansson returned to Malmö in the summer of 2023, Nørgaard was appointed Brentford captain.

He featured 31 times in the Premier League during the 2023/24 campaign and was included in Denmark’s Euro 2024 squad, where he appeared three times from the bench, including an eight-minute cameo in the 1-1 draw with England.

Nørgaard has made 25 appearances in the Premier League this season, contributing four goals and two assists.

He scored the decisive goal in Brentford’s 2-1 win over Bournemouth last time out.
