Liverpool’s summer transfer plans are reportedly set to shake the football world. According to Fichajes, the club is prepared to invest €300 million on three marquee signings—Julián Álvarez, Xavi Simons, and Alessandro Bastoni—to reinforce key areas of the squad. But how likely is such a significant overhaul under Arne Slot?
The most eye-catching target is Julián Álvarez, currently at Atlético Madrid. The report states that Liverpool would be willing to trigger his €150M release clause to bring him to Merseyside. Given his versatility across the frontline and impressive pedigree, this would undoubtedly be a statement signing.

However, Álvarez’s future remains uncertain. While his ability to “play in different attacking positions” makes him an asset, questions arise over whether Liverpool would commit such a hefty sum to a forward when other areas of the squad need urgent reinforcements.
With Liverpool’s midfield transition still ongoing, the addition of Xavi Simons makes logical sense. The Dutch midfielder, currently on loan at RB Leipzig from PSG, is valued at around €75M and possesses the flair and dynamism that Liverpool have lacked since key departures.

As Fichajes puts it, “Simons, with his quality and dynamism, would add a creative spark to the team.” His adaptability would complement the pressing-heavy system Slot prefers, yet his lack of Premier League experience could be a concern. Would Liverpool be willing to make such a substantial investment in a player who has yet to prove himself at the very highest level?
Liverpool’s defensive concerns have been well-documented, and Alessandro Bastoni’s name has surfaced as a potential solution. The Inter Milan centre-back is valued at €75M, and his composure and ability to play out from the back could make him an ideal fit for Slot’s system.

The Fichajes report highlights that “his solidity and ability with the ball fit perfectly with Arne Slot’s philosophy.” But with Liverpool’s reluctance to engage in bidding wars for elite defenders in recent years, it remains to be seen whether this is more speculation than reality.
Liverpool fans are no strangers to extravagant transfer rumours, but this €300M spree seems overly ambitious. While Álvarez, Simons, and Bastoni would undoubtedly strengthen the squad, there are plenty of reasons to be sceptical about whether such a bold move is on the cards.
Firstly, Liverpool’s ownership model has rarely supported these kinds of spending sprees. The club operates under a sustainable recruitment policy, often prioritising younger, lower-cost alternatives rather than splashing vast sums on multiple marquee signings. A single statement signing? Perhaps. But three at this price? Unlikely.
Additionally, does Álvarez even make sense? Liverpool already have Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, and Diogo Jota in attack, all of whom can play in multiple roles. Spending €150M on another versatile forward would be difficult to justify when defensive reinforcements and midfield upgrades are a greater necessity.

Then there’s the Xavi Simons link. While undeniably talented, his Premier League suitability remains a question mark. If Liverpool are going to invest €75M in a midfielder, wouldn’t someone with top-level English football experience be a safer bet?
As for Bastoni, he is arguably the most plausible target of the three. Liverpool need defensive reinforcements, and if they are to compete with Manchester City and Arsenal, strengthening at centre-back is essential. However, Inter Milan will not let him go cheaply, and Liverpool would face competition from other top European clubs.
Ultimately, while Liverpool undoubtedly need reinforcements, the idea that they will splash €300M on three high-profile signings feels unrealistic. More likely, they will make targeted, strategic investments, balancing outgoings with new arrivals rather than engaging in a fantasy-style spending spree.
