While there could be a play-off for the Scudetto, the race for European places might be decided by Serie A head-to-head record, as Atalanta, Bologna, Juventus, Lazio, Roma, Fiorentina and Milan fight for supremacy.
The Serie A rules state that while some situations need to be decided by a play-off such as the Scudetto or relegation, most positions will be dictated by other criteria.
Specifically, the first statistic they need to look at is their head-to-head record.
If more than two teams finish level on points, there is a ‘classifica avulsa’ drawn up – a mini-table of all their results against each other, with three points for a victory and one for a draw.
It is very possible we’ll see this brought into play considering there are six teams now crammed within an eight-point radius stretching from Atalanta in third to Fiorentina in eighth.
Some matches are yet to be played, so the scores could still change in the head-to-head record, but others are now set in stone.
