Chelsea are shuffling their pieces ahead of this summer and next season, especially in defence.

There are a number of defenders already in the first team squad, yet more out on loan, and strong links to the likes of Dean Huijsen and Marc Guehi as potential additions.

Rather lost in the shuffle is Aaron Anselmino, the 20 year old defender who signed from Boca Juniors in January for £15.6m, but hasn’t played a minute yet.

The plan was always to let him spend 6 months at Cobham adapting to life in England and football on a new continent, and injury has held him back from playing any part at all. He had a hamstring problem when he arrived, and has had a few minor niggles since.

In the open training session ahead of this week’s Conference League clash with Djurgarden, it was noted by the writer of the Daily Mail’s Chelsea Confidential column that Anselmino was doing individual training, presumably as the result of another injury issue.

It’s not a huge problem as nobody would have expected him to play a minute in these final games of the season anyway. The bigger question is about his future.

Strasbourg an obvious option for Anselmino

The Confidential piece confirms what has long been suspected – “the likelihood is Anselmino will be on loan somewhere this summer to gain further experience of European football,” and while the writer insists “no final call has been made”, the sheer number of central defenders in the squad when everyone is fit and back this summer makes a loan out a no brainer if the Argentine wants to pick up any minutes.

He was close to a switch to Marseille on loan in January, and we’d imagine Ligue 1 remains a solid option, with our sister club Strasbourg an obvious option.
