The ground
Argyle have recently renovated Home Park, improving facilities in the main stand whilst retaining some original character. The location of the ground is also rather pleasant, being set within a large park just outside of the centre of Plymouth.
Getting there (from Norwich)
Home Park is the furthest league ground from Norwich, so no matter how you choose to get there, you’re in for a slog.
If you’re taking the train, you’ll need to first go to London Liverpool Street and take the underground to Paddington, where you catch an onward train to Plymouth.
If going by car, first take the A11 and A1(M) towards London, before joining the M25 anti-clockwise. At junction 12, join the M3. Next, join the A303 at Baskingstoke, and follow it until you join the A30 near Upottery. Finally, join the M5 at Exeter, stay on this road as it becomes the A38 into Plymouth. The football club is signposted from Manadon Roundabout.
Free parking can be found at Outland Road Car Park, adjacent to Home Park. Argyle advises that whilst this car park is large, it can fill up quickly.
Where to drink
Roam Brewing Company’s taproom is a short walk east of the ground, across Home Park. Here you can find a rotation of beers, alongside wines, ciders, and soft drinks. They also operate a pizzeria and bakery if you’re feeling hungry.
If pubs are more your thing, the city centre is home to a number of interesting and historic options. These include the Minerva, the oldest pub in Plymouth, the interior of which is supposedly built partly from galleons of the Spanish Armada.
Footy Scran
When in the West Country, you can’t go wrong with a pasty. By all accounts you can pick up a great one at the ground. If you have a bit of time and find yourself hungry before the match, why not try Jacka Bakery? They claim to be the oldest bakery in the UK and serve home-made pasties, alongside a wide selection of other baked goods.
Things to see and do
If you’ve decided to make a weekend of your trip down to Devon, why not check out the National Marine Aquarium. Here you can see the UK’s deepest water tank, full of turtles, rays and sharks!
Fun fact
The suffix ‘Argyle’ is undoubtedly unique in English football. What makes it even more interesting is that no-one knows for certain where it came from. There are a few (largely debunked) theories, including the team being named after the Argyll and Sutherland Highland Regiment of the British Army, or a pub called the Argyle Tavern/Inn. However, the most likely explanation seems to be that the club was named after a street called Argyle Terrace.
