Sandro Wagner set to leave his coaching role with the DFB this summer

Sandro Wagner will leave his role as Julian Nagelsmann's assistant with the German national team this summer, a position he has held since 2023, following the conclusion of the UEFA Nations League final four in early June.

The decision comes as a result of the 37-year-old's desire to become a head coach elsewhere, after five years with the DFB, Germany's FA.

He initially joined the U20 side as an assistant coach to Hannes Wolf, before making the step up to the senior side where he has worked alongside Nagelsmann since 2023, helping to oversee their run to quarter-finals of Euro 2024.

After a 14-year career in professional football, representing the likes of Werder Bremen, Hoffenheim and Bayern Munich, among others, Wagner jumped straight into the coaching arena, starting off as a striker coach for the national youth teams in 2020.

He soon moved on, managing the U19 and senior sides of Unterhaching, then of Germany's fourth tier.

In two years at Unterhaching, Wagner's side averaged 1.96 points per match as they achieved promotion to the third tier.

Nagelsmann then came calling with the chance to be his assistant with the national side.

"Sandro has enriched our team with his expertise and as a person," the head coach said.

"What began as a project for the 2024 European Championship at home has developed into a long-term and trusting collaboration with Benjamin Glück and the entire coaching team, which we would like to conclude together with the Nations League title in Munich. I wish Sandro all the best for his subsequent professional endeavors."

DFB sporting director Rudi Völler was equally full of praise for Wagner: "Sandro has brought his full energy to the DFB from the very beginning and has developed enormously in his collaboration with Julian Nagelsmann."

"Working as assistant coach of the German national team was and remains a huge honour for me," Wagner said.

"I will always be grateful for this opportunity and am proud that we have achieved so much with a great coaching team. The European Championship at home, in particular, will remain an unforgettable experience for me. But I want to take the next step soon. It's no secret that it's my great dream to work as a head coach myself one day."

The Nations League final four will begin with Germany vs. Portugal in Munich on 4 June 2025, with the final also taking place there on 8 June.
