Ruben Amorim has welcomed some influential returnees to training this morning ahead of Tuesday’s trip to the City Ground.

The Manchester United boss has been made to navigate a lengthy injury list for some time now and is already expected to be without Lisandro Martinez for the remainder of the term. It was initially feared that Amad Diallo would also be unavailable until the summer, although he recently hinted at a potential return to action sooner than fans anticipated.

Today, Amorim has seen his defensive options bolstered substantially with Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro and Harry Maguire all resuming training at Carrington.

Shaw has now gone 13 months without making a Premier League start for United, with his most recent appearance from the off coming on February 18, 2024. He did feature briefly after Amorim’s appointment by making three cameos off the bench, but then sustained yet another setback in December, and has been ruled out ever since.

Yoro and Maguire suffered their respective issues around the same time, and while they’ve been sorely missed in the squad, their absences did pave the way for youngster Ayden Heaven to make his breakthrough into the first team. He impressed hugely in his maiden appearances before he was, unfortunately, stretchered off with an injury in the win over Leicester City earlier this month.

Any added depth to Amorim’s options will now be pivotal with the fixtures on the horizon. After locking horns with the Champions League-chasing Nottingham Forest next week, United then host Manchester City at Old Trafford and oversee the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final vs Olympique Lyonnais.

Sandwiched between the two European matches is a clash with Newcastle United at St.James’ Park, during which the Magpies will still likely be reeling from their emphatic Carabao Cup celebrations – their first major trophy triumph in 56 years.
