It ended Aston Villa 4 Newcastle 1.
A game full of incident but in the end, not many (if any?) positive for United.
A wicked deflection for the opening goal in the opening minute set the tone and whilst Newcastle equalised through Schar, there never really felt the conviction that the visitors were going to escape from this with a point (or more…).
United’s run of six victories (all competitions) in a row coming to an end.
Always more difficult to take when you get used to winning but this Villa away game did look the most difficult of the last six remaining matches for Newcastle United.
Looking at the individuals in black and white, interesting to get an independent perspective on how this played out.
‘Whoscored ratings use data from every single Premier League match, over 200 raw statistics included in the automated calculation of a player’s rating, weighted according to their influence within the game.
Every event of importance is taken into account, with a positive or negative effect on ratings weighted in relation to its area on the pitch and its outcome.’
Now whoscored have published their automated player ratings for this Aston Villa 4 Newcastle 1 match:
(The Whoscored ratings display can only show four subs at any one time, Emil Krafth rated a 6.3)
As you can see, seven players received a rating of 7.0 or more, with six of the seven playing for Villa.
The automated ratings made Watkins (9.0) man of the match, which I wouldn’t argue with.
Whilst the only Newcastle player to reach that 7.0 or better rating was Nick Pope (7.0), who did well in difficult circumstances and was very likely United’s best player on the day. Though he didn’t have much competition.
