Barcelona star Wojciech Szczęsny has admitted that he in no way expected Jules Koundé’s winning strike in the Copa del Rey final to ripple the net.
Defender Koundé of course proved himself the hero on Saturday night.
En route to a comeback 3-2 triumph for Barcelona against Real Madrid in the Copa showcase, the France international bagged the game’s winning goal late on.
Deep into extra-time, with proceedings headed for a penalty shootout, Koundé pounced on a loose pass in the Real Madrid half.
From here, the former Sevilla man drove towards goal, before unleashing an unstoppable long-range effort which nestled in the bottom corner of Thibaut Courtois’ goal.
The moment came as nothing short of a shock, with Koundé not exactly known for his goalscoring or shooting from distance.
And as alluded to above, one fellow Barca star who was therefore left understandably taken aback was Wojciech Szczęsny.
Speaking to the media post-match on Saturday, goalkeeper Szczęsny was drawn on Koundé’s moment of brilliance at La Cartuja.
And the Pole was not shy in admitting:
“To be honest, when Koundé was getting ready to shoot, I was already shouting at the defence to organize them again! I wasn’t expecting that to go in.”
