Last summer, Barcelona were hard at work looking to reinforce their ranks in the defensive unit, especially amid Frenkie de Jong’s injury problems and poor form.

One of the options Barcelona were considering was signing Lucas Bergvall, who was regarded as one of the most promising players in Swedish football at the time.

Bergvall was still playing his trade for Djurgarden, but he was closely linked with a move to Barcelona, among other top European clubs.

Former director on Bergvall’s potential move to Barcelona

In a recent interaction on Carina Bergfelt’s talk show (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Djurgarden sporting director Bosse Andersson spoke about Bergvall and his potential move to Barcelona that never happened.

Andersson confirmed Barcelona’s interest last summer, stating, “Lucas is an interesting and talented footballer. We had the privilege of discussing the move with one of Europe’s biggest clubs, Barcelona, who were interested.”

Bergvall, though, ended up joining Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of around €10 million, which has turned out to be an absolute bargain for the North London giants.

Indeed, the Swede has established himself as a key player for Spurs, having made almost 40 appearances in all competitions this season.

Talking about Bergvall’s decision, Andersson admitted that the player wanted to move to North London, even revealing that Barcelona were quite disappointed by his decision, which is hardly surprising given that there reports Bergvall used Barça to get a better offer.

“I think Barcelona was quite surprised because you don’t go to Barcelona just to look, you go there to have tapas and see if it’s nice. I think they were very disappointed that he chose Tottenham.

“But the decision itself was the right one because (Bergvall) has become an established Premier League player. All the coaches and everyone talks about him as a fantastic player, and he’s just turned 19,” he concluded.
