Juventus Women First Team suffered defeat in the final seconds of the Derby d'Italia on matchday four day of the Women's Serie A Poule Scudetto. The Bianconere went ahead twice at the Arena Civica Gianni Brera in Milan, but it was the home team that claimed all three points.
After the first few minutes of the match under the Milan sun, the first chance of the game fell to Abi Brighton who, after some positive play by Paulina Krumbiegel on the right, shot wayward of goal. Shortly afterwards, Chiara Beccari and Sofia Cantore came close to giving Juve the advantage, but they were unable to capitalise on a good attacking move.
Halfway through the first period Bianconere Cantore came close with a shot across goal, but was denied by the feet of the Inter keeper Cecilia Runarsdottir. On the half-hour mark, it was coach Massimliano Canzi's team who came under pressure from Annamaria Serturini who hit the crossbar after Mathilde Harviken's excellent challenge on Michela Cambiaghi.
Juve took the lead just before half-time: Abi Brighton's freekick from distance took a slight but decisive deflection off Beccari in the penalty area before the ball crept inside the far post. That was the last key action of a balanced first half with Juventus going into the break one goal ahead.
The second half began with the home team venturing forward in search of an equalising goal. The first chance, however, fell to the Bianconere and was again courtesy of Beccari who, after a promising advance by Paulina Krumbiegel, was unable to find the target with her effort. In the 56th minute, Inter found the equaliser when Martina Tomaselli's shot beat Pauline Peyraud-Magnin.
The following period of the match involved a closely contested midfield battle with few real chances for either team. Coach Canzi looked to the bench to keep up the energy levels, and it was Lindsey Thomas, who was introduced in the second half, who had a good chance when she got on the end of a wonderful ball from Cantore, but she was dispossessed in the penalty area. Moments earlier, however, Martina Lenzini did well to expertly read the trajectory of Cambiaghi's header to make a goal line clearance.
The Bianconere once again took the lead with two minutes left of regulation time and they did it in style: Krumbiegel recovered the ball and played through Amalie Vangsgaard who did well to latch onto the pass before driving into the penalty area and showing brilliant invention to backheel and tee up Cantore to finish.
In stoppage, however, the Nerazzurre firstly found the equaliser from the penalty spot through Tessa Wullaert and then went 3-2 up via Elisa Polli’s close-range rebound after Peyraud-Magnin had made a good save.
“We did not manage the game well; we could certainly have done better. Losing like that really annoys us, we are angry. We implemented the game plan we had prepared, we were playing against a strong team and the girls did everything I asked of them. The mistakes in the closing stages were costly, we cannot afford to concede a goal like the one we did in the last minute.”
