Standard Liege’s on loan forward Andréas Hountondji put in his best performance for the side since joining on loan from Burnley in the winter window. The Benin international scored his second goal for the club and was awarded with an assist for Lazare Amani’s goal which had given Standard a 2-1 lead over KV Mechelen at half-time. However, a Mechelen’s own January striker signing grabbed his first goal for the club. Bill Antonio’s cross was well finished off by Keano Vanrafelghem with just over 20 minutes to go.
Hountondji has struggled to become a starting regular at the side since his January move, but an injury during the international break to the sides top scorer Andi Zeqiri gave the Benin forward a chance to prove himself. In 10 games for Burnley this season the striker failed to find the net once, and in truth has looked well short of confidence in a Standard shirt. Perhaps this second goal of the season for the club will give him some confidence to find some form during the play-offs. Prior to joining the Lancashire side, Hountondji had scored 16 goals in 39 games for French second tier side Rodez.
The 2-2 draw between Standard and Mechelen means that the play-off two table remains as it was, just with each team in the top four spots having one more point from their matches. Dender and Westerlo play each other on Sunday, with Westerlo having the chance to go top of the mini group with a win.
