Chelsea claimed their sixth consecutive Women's Super League title with a 1-0 win at Manchester United 1-0 following Arsenal's shock 5-2 loss at Aston Villa.

With the Blues needing just a point, it would have been understandable if they played for a draw, but that was not the case as both sides went for the win in a tightly fought contest.

United shaded it at times despite Chelsea having more of the ball but it took until the 74th minute for the deadlock to be broken.

It came from Lucy Bronze, who got her head to Sandy Baltimore's corner inside a crowded box to spark wild celebrations from everyone connected to the Blues.

United looked for a way back into the game, as they look to pip Arsenal to second place, but the Blues held out to win yet another title in style and continue their quest for an unbeaten league season.

These two sides will meet again in little over two weeks in the FA Cup final, as the holders United take on domestic treble-chasing Chelsea, but for now, Sonia Bompastor will rightly revel in a brilliant first league campaign in charge.

Arsenal suffer heavy loss

Arsenal dominated possession from the outset, but fell behind after a lightning-quick Villa counter-attack. Ebony Salmon broke free and dribbled half the pitch before playing in Jordan Nobbs who coolly finished past Manuela Zinsberger.

Kirsty Hanson doubled the hosts lead just before the break with a stunning effort, smashing a left-footed shot into the roof of the net.

Within a minute of the restart, it was 3-0 as the Gunners failed to gather themselves. This time, it was Chasity Grant, who benefited from a horrendous mix-up between Katie McCabe and Zinsberger.

Rachel Daly got in on the act just before the hour with a typically neat finish after being slipped in.

Arsenal mounted a comeback in the final quarter, Stina Blackstenius and Alessia Russo halving the deficit, however Grant ended the contest shortly after with her second.

The result moves Villa into ninth, while Arsenal's title challenge is now over, with all focus now on the Champions League final.
