Transfer expert David Ornstein has shared a hugely promising update on Manchester United’s pursuit of Matheus Cunha.

The journalist assures that United already have the finances in place to sanction numerous attacking arrivals this summer, with Cunha’s posing as a relatively straightforward transaction due to the £62.5 million release clause included in his Wolverhampton Wanderers contract.

What’s more, reports have suggested the Molineux talisman has his sights set on an Old Trafford switch irrespective of whether they’ll be playing Champions League football in his first season at the club. They can now only do so by winning the Europa League, where they take on Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals of the competition.

Cunha has outscored both of the Reds’ strikers, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, in the Premier League this term; he has notched 14 goals in 28 appearances, while the United duo – both signed under Erik ten Hag – have just six goals between them.

If not Cunha: United have two Premier League stars lined up as alternatives

Yet, while United are certainly leading the race for the 13-capped Brazil international at this stage, it’s not a done deal by any stretch. A complete agreement on personal terms is yet to be agreed, and there could well be approaches made from other suitors when the window officially opens on June 1.

In the event INEOS failed in their pursuit, Ornstein has revealed the two top-flight players that have made their way onto Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s radar.

“The priority for United in this upcoming transfer window is attack,” he told NBC Sports on Wednesday evening. “They are looking at a centre-forward and a No.10 as their main focus. They want to get on with it pretty quickly. The finances are in place, as I understand it, to do the deals they would like to do. They do NOT depend on European football I’m told, nor on sales to necessitate them.

“Their main focus for the No.10 position is Matheus Cunha of Wolves. He has a £62.5m release clause. He wants to come, we’re told, but personal terms would still need to be agreed, which is not a formality. Let’s see if other clubs come in for him as well – but there is optimism at Old Trafford that they can land him.

“They have alternatives; the likes of Antoine Semenyo of Bournemouth and Tyler Dibling of Southampton, but Cunha is the one they are focusing on. It’s not close just yet, but I could see this one developing rapidly.”
