Former Milan director Ariedo Braida insists he ‘predicted’ this season’s total flop for the Rossoneri. ‘Unfortunately, there is a lack of competence within the club.’

Their 1-0 defeat to Atalanta at San Siro last night leaves them floundering in ninth place, so their chances of qualifying for any UEFA competition via Serie A position are frankly slim.

Instead, all their hopes rest on winning the Coppa Italia so that they can enter the Europa League for the 2025-26 campaign.

“I don’t want to act like a prophet here, because everyone makes mistakes, but I had predicted a season like this, which would not be in line with the expectations of a club like Milan,” Braida told Radio Anch’Io Sport.

“Unfortunately, it all came true and that really saddens me, because I have always been a Milan supporter.”

When it came to handing out the blame, Braida pointed squarely at patron Gerry Cardinale and his directors, including CEO Giorgio Furlani, technical director Geoffrey Moncada and special advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“We can only hope something changes, that someone realises they need to find solutions, with people who are competent. Unfortunately, there is a lack of competence at the club, they really are missing these qualities.”

The Rossoneri do seem to understand that they are lacking a unifying figure who can take over the transfer strategy as well as the day to day running of the club, because they have for months been searching for a director of sport.

After talks with Fabio Paratici broke down, the two favourites are now Igli Tare and current Atalanta chief Tony D’Amico.

“There are some very experienced figures being mentioned, they are competent and have what it takes to get Milan back on their feet. You need talent in football, because if you don’t have that, you won’t do it well,” concluded Braida.

“There are qualities that you require and a solution must be found.”

Braida, who marks his 79th birthday today, was director general and then director of sport at Milan from 1986 to 2013.

He also worked at Sampdoria, Barcelona, Cremonese and is currently vice president of Ravenna.
