Leyton Orient boss Richie Wellens has insisted that Tottenham Hotspur should be proud of their loan star Jamie Donley and tipped the youngster to have a tremendous career if he can be resilient.

The 20-year-old versatile attacker is considered a top prospect at Spurs, and in the summer, he was sent out on his first-ever loan spell away from the north London club.

Initially, he found it difficult to settle in at Leyton Orient, but since he picked up his form, he has been instrumental for Wellens’ side as they push for the League One playoffs.

Donley represented England and Northern Ireland at youth levels, but in the international break, he made his debut for Northern Ireland’s senior side.

Wellens insisted that even though he played as a striker for his country, he feels that Donley did not look out of place playing against quality players.

The O’s boss is confident that the 20-year-old will have a fantastic career and is certain that Tottenham should be proud of how much Donley has improved as a player and as a person.

He warned though that the Spurs talent will need to build on his resilience levels.

“We spoke about it before, how proud I am of the way he has dealt with the setbacks, built up his resilience and come back even stronger”, Wellens told Leyton Orient’s in-house media (1:52) when he was asked about the Spurs loanee’s rapid improvement at the O’s.

“I think as he goes for the next couple of years in his career, he is going to need to develop more resilience because opportunities will come, disappointments will come.

“He is a level-headed kid, he comes from a good family, and his agent is very, very good as well.

“I think Tottenham can be very proud of the lad he has turned into.

“I watched the game last night, he did not look out of place; he played in a strange position, which is not his best position.

“But I think he has shown, against top players, he has shown moments of quality and he is going to have a tremendous career.”

Donley has played 2,756 minutes in all competitions for Leyton Orient so far and has contributed six goals and six assists in the process.

The Spurs loanee will concentrate on helping Leyton Orient finish in the top six of League One, and it remains to be seen what Spurs have planned for the 20-year-old next season.
