That's according to Football Insider, who claim that Birmingham are in negotiations with Poku's representatives as they look to bring him to St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park ahead of their return to the Championship.

Poku joined Peterborough from Colchester United in the summer of 2021, but his deal at the Weston Homes Stadium is set to expire, and after he rejected a club-record contract offer, he will be available on a free transfer, although the Blues would need to pay a compensation fee as he will be under 24 at the start of next season.

Despite missing over three months of the season with a hamstring injury, Poku has scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists in 28 appearances in all competitions this campaign, and in addition to keeping Posh away from the relegation zone in League One, he helped Darren Ferguson's side win the Vertu Trophy for a second consecutive season after a 2-0 win over Birmingham at Wembley on Sunday.

In light of the news that the Blues have made their move to sign Poku, we looked back at his interesting goal celebration against Chris Davies' side last week.

In the first of two games between the clubs last week, Birmingham made the trip to Peterborough last Tuesday night as they looked to secure promotion from League One.

Goals from Alfie May and Taylor Gardner-Hickman either side of Poku's equaliser sealed the victory for the Blues, confirming their return to the Championship with six games remaining and sparking wild scenes of celebration in the away end.

However, while Birmingham supporters were fully focused on enjoying their team's success, some eagle-eyed observers noticed an intriguing goal celebration from Poku, who turned to the away end and pointed at the name on the back of his shirt after scoring before immediately holding his hands up in what seemed like an apology, as can be seen in the footage below.

That led Blues fans to revisit comments made by former manager and current Peterborough director of football Barry Fry in September when he appeared to drop a big hint that the Midlands outfit were keen on Poku.

"I’m sure Craig (Gardner) will come in for one other player I’ve got and he’ll perhaps come round to my way of thinking. He’s got to pay my money instead of his!" Fry told the Keep Right On podcast.

When pushed for a name, Fry was asked whether the player he was referring to was a 23-year-old winger, and he replied: "Yeah, something like that. And he’s the top scorer in the league at the moment with your fellas!"

Poku's goal celebration last week certainly raised a few eyebrows, but after it was revealed Birmingham are in talks to sign the winger, it makes sense that he was keen to offer an apology to the supporters of his prospective new club after scoring against them.

Having rejected Peterborough's contract proposal, owner Darragh MacAnthony has seemingly resigned himself to losing Poku in the summer, and he stated earlier in the season that "he knows it’s time for him to go to the next level", predicting that "he will get a high-end Championship club".

The Blues are no stranger to targeting Posh players, with Fry revealing that they had previously attempted to sign three of the club's stars, and the 80-year-old has all but confirmed that his former club are also interested in Poku.

Poku has certainly earned the opportunity to make the step up to the Championship after establishing himself as one of the best players in League One in recent years, and he would be an exciting addition for Birmingham as they prepare for life back in the second tier.
