Playing with control of the game is how Unai Emery wants to see Aston Villa play throughout all competitions. That is only possible with a strong force in the midfield. Youri Tielemans started in his role, and John McGinn has often served extremely well in his capacity.
Fans and neutrals alike, however, noticed how well Boubacar Kamara commanded the center of the park against Preston North End. The Frenchman did well limiting the PNE attack, regaining possession, and then initiating the push the other way.
The opening minutes of the FA Cup quarter-final may have been frustrating, with supporters wanting to see more. The truth is, however, that being able to play what some consider a 'boring' style before entering the final third can be something of a positive.
Kamara simply bossed in his role, and the control of the match is something that Emery will want to see more of, particularly against the better Premier League sides. The ability to take the sting out of opposition control, particularly in the midfield, is essential to consistently achieve good results.
An industrious player that can both protect the backline and give the ball to teammates in advanced positions is what every club needs. Villa are fortunate to have three. On the day, it was the efforts of Kamara that stood out.
The 25-year-old is reportedly engaged in contract extension talks, and it will be another important aspect for Monchi and Emery to discuss before the upcoming summer transfer window. If he continues to string these types of performances together, the final asking price from his camp could continue to rise and be significantly higher than wherever their current number is at.
