As Hansi Flick resorted to heavy rotation against Girona this past weekend, Gerard Martin was one of the many beneficiaries.

The young defender replaced Alejandro Balde at left-back, which was thought to be a risky move by Flick.

However, the youngster repaid the faith with a brilliant performance against Girona, offering width and technical prowess on the left flank.

Gerard Martin’s most notable contribution was his assist for Ferran Torres, who added more gloss to the scoreline by netting a late goal.

But beyond that, Martin was instrumental in making sure Girona attackers don’t hit back and leverage the spaces in behind the Barcelona backline.

The youngster made three clearances, won his sole aerial duel, and was not dribbled past even once throughout the match.

On the offensive end, the youngster was equally effective. With 83 touches and a passing accuracy of 88%, he was a constant presence on the left flank.

Moreover, Martin made one key pass and one accurate long ball, which suggests that the left-back is equally useful going forward as well.

What’s next for Gerard Martin?

This performance against Girona should go a long way in helping Martin make a stronger case for being included in future matches, as a backup option for Balde.

The youngster has already accumulated over 1,000 minutes of action this season. If he can continue proving himself as a more balanced alternative to Balde, there might be a place for him next season as well.

For now, though, Martin must remain focused and gobble up any opportunity that comes forward, between now and the end of the season.
