On the pitch, Chelsea are focused on qualifying for the Champions League. Last night’s win against Tottenham was an important one in that regard.
Off the pitch, the aim remains unchanged too: continue to accumulate the best young players in the world and develop them either to improve the first team or to sell. On that front, the work never stops, and today we’ve got an update from well connected German insider Christian Falk on what’s going on in his world right now.
His “Daily Briefing” for CaughtOffside had an update on rising Greek star Konstantinos Karetsas. Bayern Munich are after him, but it sounds like we’re a step ahead:
“Vincent Kompany likes Konstantinos Karetsas. The young footballer (17), who plays for KRC Genk, is an attacking midfielder,” Falk wrote.
“FC Bayern have him on their shortlist, but they haven’t contacted the Belgian side yet. Chelsea, however, I’ve heard are already in talks with the player’s side.”

This is the first we’ve heard of any concrete interest linking Chelsea to the youngster, following some vague chatter back in December, but we’re not surprised to hear we’re in the mix. We’ve done well moving quickly and quietly with players like Geovany Quenda and Dario Essugo in recent months, not letting anything leak until the deal is done, and perhaps the situation is the same here.
Karetsas is exactly the profile of player we’ve been buying, and we’re not at all surprised to hear us linked. There are a lot of young attacking midfielders on our books already, but that hasn’t stopped our steady accumulation in the past, and we don’t expect that to change now.
Given he’s already playing regular men’s football in Belgium, a move to Strasbourg on loan would be a natural next step for the young talent.
