West Ham have been known for making controversial transfer splashes in the past when they feel desperate for a boost, and with yet another season toiling away in the doldrums of the Premire League table, you can sense a collective worry that the Hammers may be headed for a few more transfer blunders.
Already, West Ham made a couple of missteps on the transfer market last summer. Carlos Soler and Niclas Fullkrug have clearly not helped the attack as hoped, and they will almost certainly be jettisoned out of the club shortly.
Although West Ham will be prioritizing striker help in the summer 2025 transfer market, a recent transfer rumor has them linked to a midfield playmaker - and a pretty big name in world football, at that.
According to Claret and Hugh's Matt Kemp, West Ham are among "several" Premier League clubs currently in talks with the representatives for former Manchester United and Juventus star Paul Pogba, who has been out of football after serving an 18-month doping ban that only recently ended.
Pogba's suspension understandably earned him a prompt release from Juve, but his reunion in Turin was already heading down south even before the doping charge. The Frenchman was woeful on the pitch, though he was scarcely available due to the same recurring injuries that have blighted what was once an incredibly promising career.
Per the report from Claret and Hugh, Pogba, now 32, has been rejecting offers from the Saudi Pro League and Brazilian Serie A. It appears he wants to return to a top European league in order to try and make one last play at the World Cup. Pogba's last strong displays have come with the French national team, as he was arguably the best player at the entire World Cup tournament in 2018, alongside superstar teammates Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann.
Now 32, Pogba reportedly wants a salary exceeding 150,000 pounds per week, which seems absurd for a player who is rarely ever healthy, hasn't played meaningful football in around two years, and has a questionable track record of success in the last five seasons. While class is permanent and Pogba's technical quality as a passer and distance shooter are what truly separate him from his peers, he may have no gas in the proverbial tank.
Maybe someone else wants to take a gamble on Pogba, but a struggling Premier League side already saddled with ill-advised veteran gambles like West Ham is hardly anywhere near the feasible destinations for this fallen great footballer. The fact that the Hammers have been linked in any way to Pogba is surprising and mildly concerning for most fans, who would gladly run in the opposite direction.
